For years, whenever painter Theo Dorian confessed to his Brooklyn-based peers that he lived in Staten Island, they let him know in no uncertain terms that the borough best known for its mobster mansions, strip malls and sprawling garbage dump was no place for a self-respecting artist.

They may be eating their words.
