An artists’ colony blossoms in St. George

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – When Amy Peters traded her Williamsburg apartment four years ago for a sweet place in an historic building in St. George – one that rented for a third the price – she felt like a homesteader, sallying into the unknown.

But what she discovered as she got to know her neighborhood and the people living there, was this was not the Staten Island everybody had warned her about. Ms. Peters had, in fact, moved into a community of like-minded artists, doing edgy and innovative work, and supporting each other in a way unheard of in the dog-eat-dog corridors of other parts of the city.
